Drivers, Teams, Fans and Cyclists Bike the Road America Race Track to Fight Cancer
Tour de Road America – BIKE RIDE TO FIGHT CANCER raises more than $21,000
Elkhart Lake, WI – More than 350 participants rose to the challenge of the hills and fourteen turns of the four-mile Road America race track Friday evening in Elkhart Lake as part of the 8th annual “tour de Road America - Bike Ride to Fight Cancer.” It was a spectacular sight as cyclists from 4 to 68 years old rode bicycles of all kinds against the sunset backdrop of Road America’s natural beauty.
The race fans, families, cancer survivors, and local cyclists joined forces with more than 25 professional race car drivers, as well as their teams and officials from the American Le Mans Series, Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Championship, Cooper Tires presents the USF2000 Championship powered by Mazda and other racing series, with a goal of raising $25,000 during the Road Race Showcase race weekend at Road America.
The annual ride benefits the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer, the official charity of the American Le Mans Series, as well as LIVESTRONG, and the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic in Sheboygan, Wis.
As of Friday evening, the Tour de Road America Foundation reported that $21,013 had been raised. Event co-director and foundation president George Siegle expects the group will achieve their $25,000 goal. “The race teams and ride participants are continuing to get phenomenal pledges of support. Saturday’s silent auction of autographed motorsports memorabilia and items from local businesses will probably add another $2,500 to our total.”
Guy Cosmo, driver of the American Le Mans Series #02 Tequila Patrón Extreme Speed Motorsports car in the GT class not only participated in the ride, he also helped raise funds to help fight cancer. “Though the fabulous support of all my friends, family and followers, we’ve raised nearly $4,000 for the cause today, and I’m really proud to be a part of raising money to help these great charities, LIVESTRONG, and the Austin Hatcher Foundation.”
Teammate Johannes Van Overbeek also joined in the fun, “I was really excited to do the tour de Road America in support of the Austin Hatcher Foundation, LIVESTRONG, and those all the people in need who are afflicted with cancer. It was great to be out there with over 350 of my closest friends!”
Drivers from the American Le Mans Series included Kenny Wilden, Melanie Snow, Christian Zugel, Bruno Junquiera, and Andrea Robertson, and others.

Tour de Road America – BIKE RIDE TO FIGHT CANCER
fundraiser returns to Elkhart Lake’s Road America on Friday, August 19 - 6:15 PM
Race Fans, Drivers, Teams, Families, and Local Cyclists aim to raise $25,000
Elkhart Lake, WI – Race fans, families, cancer survivors, and cyclists will get a once-a-year chance to experience the Road America race track’s four miles of sweeping turns, hills, and scenic natural beauty at the 8th annual Tour de Road America - “Bike Ride to Fight Cancer” on Aug. 19 at 6:15 p.m.
They will be joined on the track by professional racing drivers, teams, and their families from the American Le Mans Series, Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Championship, F2000 Championship, and other racing series.
Together, they aim to raise $25,000 for three organizations that support cancer survivorship - the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer, the official charity of the American Le Mans Series, as well as the Lance Armstrong Foundation, and the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic in Sheboygan, Wis.
The Road America course challenges cyclists with its hills and is kid-friendly, allowing entire families to participate on the traffic-free track.
The fundraising ride follows Friday’s auto racing activities and is open to cyclists of all abilities, and all kinds of bikes. For many cyclists and race fans, it’s the highlight of the summer – the chance to turn laps on the smooth track alongside their racing heroes as the sun sets over the scenic Kettle Moraine countryside of Elkhart Lake.
Guy Cosmo, driver of the American Le Mans Series #02 Tequila Patrón Extreme Speed Motorsports car in the GT class is ready for the ride, “I’m really excited to be participating in this year’s Tour de Road America. My motivation? To help. The Lance Armstrong Foundation and Austin Hatcher Foundation are incredible organizations that I believe in and want to support. I believe in the fight against cancer and the Tour de Road America provides me with an opportunity to contribute.
“If all I have to do is ride a bicycle around one of my favorite race tracks; tell all my friends, family and followers; ask for help in raising money; and enjoy myself, then I’m convinced. I'm behind it 100 percent! This couldn’t be any easier, and it’s going to be a blast!” he continued.
Other drivers from the American Le Mans Series scheduled to appear include Rocky Moran, Kenny Wilden, Jarrett Boon, P.J. Jones, Melanie Snow, Christian Zugel, Bruno Junquiera, David Murray, Johannes Van Overbeek, and Andrea Robertson.
Event Co-Director and Tour de Road America Foundation vice president Brett Edgerle expects a large and enthusiastic ride, “We’ll see 300 to 400 people out on the track helping us raise funds for the fight against cancer…from little kids on their first bike without training wheels, to recreational riders, serious cyclists on time trial bikes, families on tandem bicycles, entire race teams – driver, crew, families and all – and everything in between. The huge smiles we see on everyone’s faces when they’ve finished the ride – even from professional drivers who are used to blazing around here in their cars at 200 mph – really demonstrate the fun of biking the track for three great organizations.”
A silent auction of one-of-a-kind motorsports memorabilia, cycling gear, and local items will take place on Friday and Saturday, culminating just before the start of the American Le Mans Series feature race on Saturday afternoon.

Elkhart Lake, WI – The Tour de Road America – Bike Ride to Fight Cancer presented by Delta Dental returns for its 6th year to Elkhart Lake’s Road America 4.0-mile, 14-turn auto racing circuit this Friday, August 14 at 6:15 P.M. The event coincides with the Time Warner Cable Road Race Showcase featuring the American Le Mans Series weekend of auto races at the track.
After Friday’s motorsports action winds down, the cycling action will gear up. Race fans, local cyclists, cancer survivors and families can join professional drivers and their race teams on track to raise funds for cancer survivorship. Participants can ride one lap or as many as they can before the sun sets. All kinds of bikes are welcome, and the ride is open to all ability levels and cyclists young and old. The popular Corvette Challenge “race within the ride” will also return on Friday for an international, winner-take-all, one-lap bicycle race around the 4.0-mile course. Corvette Racing program manager Doug Fehan takes on Corvette Racing driver Jan Magnussen, and SpeedTV commentator Calvin Fish for bragging rights and to raise funds for the event’s beneficiaries, the Lance Armstrong Foundation, the Austin Hatcher Foundation, the late Paul Newman’s Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, and the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic.
Fans can show their support for either Fehan, Magnussen, or Fish by pledging donations through www.pelotonride.org/corvettechallenge.html. Corvette Racing fans can also pledge donations in person at the Corvette Corral or by mail with a downloaded form from www.pelotonride.org/CorvetteChallengeForm.pdf.
In addition to the ride, the event also features a silent auction of auto racing memorabilia, cycling gear and items donated by local businesses on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Organizers expect 300 to 400 cyclists to take part in the ride and hope to raise $40,000. “Lance returned to the bicycle to raise awareness for his LIVESTRONG Foundation’s global campaign to fight cancer. His strong showing at the Tour de France definitely re-energized interest in cycling, fighting cancer and in the Tour de Road America. We’re expecting many of Lance’s “LIVESTRONG ARMY” to make a showing here on Friday evening…it’s going to be a great ride and we hope to make a big contribution to the fight against cancer!” said Tour de Road America organizer George Siegle.
More information and online registration is available at www.pelotonride.org, www.roadamerica.com, or at the track at the Tour de Road America booth on Friday.

Lance Armstrong and Pro Cyclists Prepare for the Tour de France,
Locals Cyclists Look Towards the
Tour de Road America “Bike Ride to Fight Cancer” on August 14
Elkhart Lake, WI – While professional cyclists and cycling fans eagerly await the start of the Tour de France this Saturday, cyclists from around the Midwest are also stretching their legs in anticipation of the 6th Tour de Road America “Bike Ride to Fight Cancer.”
Many local fans will be cheering the return of Lance Armstrong to the ranks of pro cycling and have high hopes for a strong finish from the 7-time winner and cancer survivor. The Tour de Road America has a strong connection with Lance – his Lance Armstrong Foundation, with its LIVESTRONG global campaign to fight cancer, is the principal beneficiary of the fundraising ride.
A key goal of Mr. Armstrong’s return to the pro ranks is to increase awareness of cancer and the need for funding for research and survivorship programs.
On Friday, August 14, American Le Mans Series drivers and their teams, fans and families, local cyclists, and cancer survivors will take to the famous 14 turns and hills of the scenic 4.0 mile Road America auto racing circuit to do their part in the fight against cancer.
The family-friendly fundraising ride begins at approximately 6:30 P.M., following the day’s auto racing activities. The ride is open to cyclists of all abilities and all kinds of bikes.
New for 2009, the Tour de Road America is pleased to add the Austin Hatcher Foundation as an official beneficiary of the event, joining the Lance Armstrong Foundation, the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, and the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic.
“It was a natural fit to partner with Jim and Amy Jo Osborn and their foundation,” said George Siegle, President of the Tour de Road America Foundation. “With their connection to the American Le Mans Series, motorsports roots, and their incredible determination in turning a personal tragedy into small victories in the long-term fight against cancer, we just couldn’t ignore the opportunity to join forces.”
A silent auction of one-of-a-kind motorsports memorabilia and local items will take place on Saturday and Sunday, August 15 and 16, culminating just before the start of the American Le Mans Series race on Sunday afternoon.
